The Dog Days of Phillies Extended Spring Training Games Continue On

Lots of roster movements taking place in extended spring training but the Phillies were still able to put two teams on the field this afternoon against the Pirates at the Carpenter Complex.  Yesterday afternoon we watched a couple of former extended spring players play, 19 year olds, shortstop Malquin Canelo who doubled and catcher Jesus Posso who homered and threw a seed to throw out a base runner at second, for the Threshers in a 6-3 win over the D-Cubs in FSL action.  The win broke a five game losing streak for the struggling Threshers.

We also learned that Lakewood’s clean up hitter and third baseman Zach Green was sent back to extended spring and replaced by young 19-year old Jan Hernandez who was third round draft pick in last year’s draft.  Also, Andrew Anderson has left extended spring and will start for the pitching challenged Lakewood BlueClaws tonight.

Hernandez trip to the shore might be brief because third baseman Mitch Walding made an extended spring  appearance in today’s game.  Walding has not played this spring because of a rib injury.  He was Lakewood’s third baseman last year where he hit .224.  He was a fifth round pick in the 2011 draft.

The starting lineup today for Manager Shawn Williams team on Robert’s Field, which will eventual form the Williamsport Crosscutters when the NY-Penn League opens June 12th, had the following starting lineup: Deivy Grullon c, Trey Williams 1b, Ovey Marte, 2b, Jair Morelos SS, Luis Encarnacion 3b, Herlis Rodriquez lf, Cord Sandberg cf and Jiandido Tromp rf.   On the mound were starter Mitch Gueller and relievers Jonathan Musser and Rick Bielski.  Not much scoring took place but Grullon hit a long one that was caught in front of the batters eye in center.  Tromp was squaring up the ball as he has all spring. Herlis Rodriquez continues to barreled up the ball. Trey Williams looks ready to have a breakout season at the plate.

Over on Ashburn Field the future GCL Phillies under  manager Roly DeArmas  were going through another extended spring game.  The starting lineup had Wilber Torres c, William Cuicas 1b, Grenny Cumana 2b, Emmanuel Serra ss, Mitch Walding 3b, Bryan Martelo lf, Venn Biter cf and Jose Pujols rf.   On the mound included righties Seranthony Dominguez and a tall lean and lanky Franklyn Kilome among others.  Needless to say expect a lot of changes after the 2014 draft where the Phillies will pick seventh each round.  The draft will take place from June 5-7.   With the Phillies drafting so high in the upcoming staff look for many more roster changes before the Williamport Crosscutters and the GCL Phillies start  the half season rookie leagues.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show.
