Another Day of Extended Spring Training At The Phillies Carpenter Complex

Another intersquad game today.  The Pirates were expect to bus up from Bradenton but the weather was threatening so they did not come across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

It was veteran lefty Adam Loewen trying to win a job as a pitcher vs. young righty Lewis Alezones on the hill in camp game.  The big soft-tossing lefty was effective as long as he kept his pitches down and Alezones had some good off speed pitches.  Let’s hope General Manager Ruben Amaro can find some young power arms in the upcoming Draft because he has none fitting that description on the extended spring training roster.  SEE HERE.

Kelly Dugan was in right field and was swinging the bat but it was apparent he has a lot of work to do to get back in action at AA after his rehab stint.  On the other hand, catcher Chace Numata looked in mid-season form getting two hits up the middle and throwing out Herlis Rodriquez trying to steal second.  He just started hitting in games this week while rehabbing since the start of spring training after wrist surgery.

Speaking of Herlis Rodriquez he did not disappoint in today’s game.  He never does. He threw out a runner at the plate trying to score on a base hit with a laser from left field and ripped a single through the hole to right field.

Two guys that can flat out hit and stand about and are about foot a part in height. Shortstop Grenny Cumana at  5’5″ can drive the ball with the best of them.  He doubled into the gap in left-center on a high fastball.   Last week he came up with a big two out, two run rbi single to tie up a game against the Blue Jays.   Though outfielder Freddy Zorrilla grounded out to short today, just watching him swing shows a major league stoke and body.  Last week he took one out over the right center field fence on Ashburn Field.

Tonight we expect to watch Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez make his Florida State League debut with the Threshers at Bright House Field.  We watched him pitch last Saturday in an extended spring training game on Roberts Field.  He did not give up any runs and was touched up for three hits over 4.1 innings.  He struck out only one with a fastball that sat at 93 mph but I did not see any other pitches that would be described as of the “swing and miss” variety.

Tomorrow, the Phillies extended spring training squads travel up the road a few miles to the Blue Jays minor league complex with Feliberto Sanchez expected to be one of the two pitchers to start in one of the games there.  But the best news will be after tonight’s game, the Clearwater Threshers go on a 12 day road trip to give us a break from their 8-28 season.
