Phillies Prospects Hoskins, Sandberg, and Garcia Show Major League Quality Power and Pitches In Instructs Action

After watching on the internet the Phillies get shutout by the Marlins last night, I have come to the conclusion that watching in person the Florida  Instructional League Phillies play their Yankee counterparts yesterday afternoon at Bright House Field was much more rewarding.

The Phillies Instructs downed the Yankees 5-1 but that was not the point.  The point was watching young players with major league skill sets perform well.  It allows us to project what the future might hold for the Phillies because the present is not too encouraging.

The Phillies marred with an aging roster and the inability to score runs are tough to watch.  In yesterday’s instructs game we saw a nice balance of hitting and pitching.  They were exciting to watch.

Early in the game 19 year-old, 2013 third round draft pick, center fielder Cord Sandberg just missed a home run to right center as the ball hit off the top of the wall just below the yellow line in front of the berm.  Sandberg wound up on third base for a triple.  He would later beat out an infield bunt for a single.

Designated hitter/first baseman Rhys Hoskins put on a hitting clinic.  In his first two times up he had base hits to the right side and his third time up he hit a majestic home run that hit off the far side top of the Tiki Bar in left for a two run homer.  See Here.  All totaled he had three hits, three runs scored and two rbi’s.

Hoskins could be the right handed power bat the Phillies someday will need in the starting lineup.   He had nine homers in half a season with Williamsport in the New York-Penn League.  The 21 year old Hoskins was a fifth round draft pick in the June draft.  The same round as Ryan Howard was drafted.

On the mound we saw 19 year old  lefty Elniery Garcia show his major league quality breaking pitch as he struck out a Yankee batter swing to end his two inning stint on the mound. See Here. He was throwing a 91 mph fastball and a low 70’s curve ball.  But this being instructional baseball he gave up a long home run to a left handed batter on what appeared to be a changeup that he left up in the zone.  The changeup is a pitch he is working on instructs.

As the Phillies major league season comes to an end, remember the names Cord Sandberg, Rhys Hoskins and Elniery Garcia,  three players that already are showing major league skill sets in the FIL at young ages.
