Dylan Cozens Off To A Big Start In Australian Baseball Pre-Season Action

Offseason baseball is in full swing and Phillies prospects are busy in many places.  Dylan Cozens is off to a big start in preseason Australian action for the Melbourne Aces.  Darin Ruf is struggling and Maikel Franco made his debut both in the Dominican Winter League.  Freddy Galvis is getting going again in Venezuela and after a quick start Aaron Altherr has cooled off in the VWL.  Roster are starting to appear in the Roberto Clemente Puerto Rican Winter League and it looks like Jan Hernandez will be playing in his native Commonwealth there.

Count the Scottsdale Scorpions center fielder Roman Quinn back in action on Saturday after not playing for a couple of games in the Arizona Fall League.  We hope Roman plays on TV when the Scorpions take on the Salt River Rafters on Friday afternoon in one of those pace of game contests on the MLB network.

Cozens is off to a strong start in preseason Australian Baseball Action over the weekend.  In his first game Friday night he homered to left and threw out a runner out at the plate.  In Saturday’s action he had two hits and three runs driven in.    Though they were just exhibition games, it good to see the Dylan get off to a good start down under.

Ruf just can’t seem to get it going in the DWL.  After going 2 for 3 with a homer in his first game there, he has struggled going 1 for 18 over his next five games playing first base.  Franco made his DWL debut on Thursday night going 1 for 4 at third base.

Down in the VWL Freddy Galvis debuted with his Zulia team this week and in two games went 3 for 9 with a couple of RBIs.   His teammate with Zulia, Aaron Altherr, got off to a great start with two homers in his first five games but in five games since then he has gone 1 for 11 with five strikeouts.

We will be watching for the release of the Puerto Rican League rosters.  That season starts on Thursday night.  Only one team has released its roster so far and the only Phillies player on it was third baseman Jan Hernandez for the Criollos de Caguas team.  Also a few weeks back David Biddle, the father of Jesse Biddle, said Jesse will be “throwing in the Puerto Rican Winter League”.

The Phillies academies will be alive on Monday too.  Several of our buddies will be continuing or starting offseason workouts at the Phillies Dominican Academy to get ready for the 2015 season.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show. This is what this blog is mostly all about. To read more, click here: https://baseballross.wordpress.com/2012/02/05/how-i-got-started-in-baseball/
