Tommy Joseph Walks Off The Yankees1 In GCL Action. Is He The Phillies First Baseman Of The Future?

Rehabbing Tommy Joseph has been putting on quite a show for us GCL fans .  Tommy has gone 10 for 20 with three home run in nine GCL games.  Yesterday, on Robin Robert Field at the Carpenter Complex, he hit a long two-run walk off home run to left in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the GCL Phillies a 9-7 win.  Watch HERE.

Also scoring on the walk off was this year’s first round pick Cornelius Randolph, who had double in the previous at bat.  Watch HERE.

Tommy is making the transition to the corner infield positions because he will no longer be catching because of numerous concussions.  Last week he made a start at third base though he did not show much range at the hot corner.  First base would seem to be more to his liking particularly if he can continue to hit the long ball as he has shown so far in the Gulf Coast League.

The Phillies seem particularly deep at first base.  Brock Stassi is putting up strong numbers at Reading.  Last night, Rhys Hoskins hit his fifth home run for the Clearwater Threshers and 14th overall.  Also last night, Lakewood’s first baseman and Phillies fourth round June draft pick,  Kyle Martin just missed hitting one out for Lakewood and had to settle for a ground rule double. Even the GCL Phillies 17-year old regular first baseman Luis Encarnacion, who was the designated hitter yesterday, went 5 for 5.

Ryan Howard has one more year to go on his contract.  The battle is on to be his heir apparent at first base.  Joseph, Stassi, Hoskins, Martin and Encarnacion all look like they have the tools to play in the major leagues at first base some day.  At least at first base the Phillies seem well stocked for the post Howard era.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show. This is what this blog is mostly all about. To read more, click here: https://baseballross.wordpress.com/2012/02/05/how-i-got-started-in-baseball/
