Reggie Jackson was Mr. October and Derek Jeter was Mr. November at the major league level back in the day but at the minor league level who will be the Phillies Mr. September?
With Labor Day on September 7th this year the minor leagues will go a week into September. Then, the Phillies farm teams, Reading, Clearwater and Williamsport, will be playing in the post season playoffs.
All the statistical websites have the month by month splits of player’s stats, though playoff stats are compiled separately. It’s always important to finish strong so this time in addition to August, September will provide several weeks of stat splits for some Phillies minor league players especially those of them who will be playing in the 2015 minor league playoffs.
Last night we watched the Threshers hold on to win a 9-8 game in Dunedin and several players padded their stats last night already for the month with only three regular season games remaining:
Carlos Tocci had two hits including his second homer as a Thresher this season and is 4 for 11. Watch his base hit HERE .
Mitch Walding average overall is the highest of the season at .230 as he went 2 for 4 with a double to go 3 for 8. Watch his double HERE.
Malquin Canelo has finally started to hit and with his two hits last night has gone 4 for 10. Watch one of his base hits HERE.
Rhys Hoskins went 3 for 5 and has gone 4 for 11 including a homer against Daytona. Watch his last rbi base hit HERE.
On the mound the Ricardo Pinto got the win to go to 9-2 and 15-4 on the season including his work earlier with Lakewood but struggled on the mound giving up five runs in five innings of work. Cody Forsythe and Alexis Rivero came on and shut down the Blue Jays to earn holds.
Rivero is finishing the season strong in relief. In his last seven relief appearances he has worked 15 innings and has given up only one run on six hits with 3 walks and 15 strikeouts.
In Rivero’s final out last night he came back from a 3-0 count to get a strikeout by painting the outside corner of the plate on three straight pitches to get his first hold for the Threshers. Watch HERE
The Phillies Front Office declared Reading catcher Andrew Knapp and Clearwater’s Ricardo Pinto as its position and pitching minor league players of the Month for August. Read HERE.
We have a rare opportunity with enough statistical significant stats to designate Phillies minor league players of the month in September.
After last night’s game, Tocci, Walding, Canelo, Hoskins and Rivero have quick head starts for September’s Phillies minor league awards.
