Tonight might be the night that the Reading Fightin Phils win the Eastern League Championship exclusively for the first time since 1995. They shared the Championship in 2001 when the Finals were cancelled because of 9/11.
Last night Jake Thompson pitched seven strong innings for the win. J.P. Crawford continued his torrid hitting going 2 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and a rbi. Nick Williams went deep with what turned out to be the game winning fourth run in the fifth inning. In fact all but one batter in the Reading lineup had at least one hit in the 9-3 win over the Bowie BaySox to go up 2-1 in the best of five series.
Jake “Big Game” Thompson has been dominate in the EL post season going 2-0 over 16 innings, giving up only one run on 7 hits and striking out 13.
“Mr. September”, J.P. Crawford, is leading the EL playoffs with a .476 batting average plus 7 walks for the second best OPS in the post season.
Nick “Long Ball” Williams homered last night for his third to leave the park in the six post season games so far.
Ben”The Clincher” Lively takes to the mound in Game Four tonight in Bowie. Lively picked up the win in the clinching Game Three of the first round against Binghamton.
If Reading can win tonight or tomorrow night, it will be the first time a Phillies farm team has won a league championship playoff since Lakewood won the South Atlantic League Championship and the GCL Phillies won the Gulf Coast League Championship, both in 2010.
The voice of the Fightin Phils, Mike Ventola, has the call for tonight’s game on the internet. First pitch is at 7:05. See Baseball Betsy’s pictures from the 2010 teams as they celebrated below:
