With Instruct over for the 2015 season, we want to take the time to name the Baseball Betsy and Ross Phillies players of Instructs who impressed us the most.
We were able to attend six instructs games including an intrasquad scrimmage which started the four weeks of Instructs. We did not see much hitting except for the performances Roman Quinn and Maikel Franco. And they we here to continue their rehabs. The Phillies Instruct players were mostly off of the half season rookie Williamsport and Gulf Coast League rosters.
In the last three games we watched the Phillies Instructs bat in 24 innings scored only one run. But it was enough to win the final game of Instructs 1-0 over the Yankees on Thursday. In the two prior games the Phillies were out scored 9-0 by the Blue Jays Instructs in the 16 innings we watched. We were told that they did hit the ball and score runs in other Instruct games which we did not attend but team records are not publicly released.
So that means we are going to pick the pitching and position player awards from a limited sample size of players we saw play during Instructs over the last four weeks. But none the less, we feel confident we have selected several players who have major league potential to play someday in Citizens Bank Park.
Our Phillies 2015 Instruct Pitcher of the Year award goes to right-hander Edgar Garcia. He just turned 19-years old October 4th. He was impressive pitching for the GCL Phillies mainly in relief this summer where he struck out 34 in 32.2 innings.
We saw Garcia pitch in the first game of Instructs and he struck out three Blue Jays in order with a runner at third in one of his two innings of work. In the last game of Instructs on Thursday he struck out four in two innings of shutout relief against the Yankees. He struck out the side in his second inning. Garcia is hard to hit because of the movement of his slider. Watch him strikeout the side against the Yankees HERE, HERE and HERE.
Our Phillies Instructs Left-handed Pitcher of the Year award goes is Will Stewart. He has come on strong since being drafted as a 17-year old high schooler back in June in the 20th round of the Draft. He turned 18 this July.
Stewart finished strong for the GCL Phillies striking out eight and giving up only one walk over 5.1 innings in his last two appearances of the season back in late August.
In Thursday’s game to end Instructs, he struck out two in each of the two innings he pitched. Will is going to be a good one to watch since he has learned to throw strikes as the 2015 season went on. Watch HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE for his four strikeouts.
Stewart reminded me of a young Chris Short on Thursday. Read Here
Another teenager, catcher Deivi Grullon, is our choice for the 2015 Phillies Instruct Position Player of the Year. Deivi was the starting catcher in the Instruct games we attended. His defense was excellent, especially on a throw to second to cut down a Yankees base runner’s attempt to steal second base on Thursday. He threw out 32% percent of 102 base stealing attempts this season with Lakewood. He hit .359 over his last ten games for Lakewood with two homers as he finished strong in the Sally League. We saw him double to left center in a game at the Blue Jays Complex the last weekend of Instructs.
Baseball Betsy and I want to give our tips of the cap to Edgar Garcia, Will Stewart, Deivi Grullon and the rest of the Instruct boys for their play in the Phillies 2015 Instruct games. We look forward to seeing each of them all have breakout seasons in 2016 as they move up the Phillies chain.
