Much change has come to the Phillies organization over the last six months. The Phillies have acquired 16 players, mostly pitching from other major league organizations for seven Phillies organization players in trades. Only two players Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz remain from the 2008 World Series team.
With such dramatic change in the air for the next few seasons in the Phillies organization, I still believe that two players drafted by them remain the keys to the future offense of the team . They are right fielder and second round, 2012 draft pick, Dylan Cozens and fifth round, 2014 draft pick, Rhys Hoskins.
Baseball Betsy and I have been there from the beginning for both Cozens and Hoskins. We watched Cozens start out in the Gulf Coast League in 2012 and Hoskins play his first game for Williamsport in the New York/Penn League last season.
They have never disappointed us. This season we followed them when Hoskins started the season with Lakewood and when they were both together with the Clearwater Threshers. They are both players you want on your side with the game on the line and the types you want to build your team around.
This past weekend they both showed what they are made of. Cozens went deep in the Puerto Rican Winter League All-Star game Saturday night. He went the other way with a long shot to left center for a three-run homer in the game. Watch HERE.
Not to be out done Hoskins also went the other way with a long two-run double to right center to drive in the winning runs in the third game of a four game weekend sweep by Sydney Blue Sox in the Australian Baseball League. Watch HERE.
With all the moves made by the Phillies Front Office the offensive firepower of the future for the Phillies will still come down to the likes of the power bats of right fielder Dylan Cozens as he showed in the PWL All-Star game and first baseman Rhys Hoskins in the series swept over the weekend. Hoskins will play in the ABL All-Star game on Wednesday.
The 16 new players that the Phillies Front Office have acquired over the last six months may be key contributors to the team returning to post season glory but it will be the likes of home grown players like Dylan Cozens and Rhys Hoskins who will make the difference whether they win or lose when the games are on the line.
