The Phillies have announced the following nine players have been invited to major league spring training as non-roster invitees:
RHP: Mark Appel, Zach Eflin, Jake Thompson
C: Andrew Knapp, Gabriel Lino, Logan Moore
1B: Brock Stassi
SS: J.P. Crawford
OF: Nick Williams
Thompson and Moore have impressed me. Thompson was dominating in the Eastern League post-seas0n and Moore has just stood out in the Dominican Winter League.
Thompson went 2-0 in two post-season starts for Reading when he pitched 16 innings giving up one run, seven hits, walked 4 and struck out 13.
Still playing in the Dominican Winter League playoffs, after last night 3-2 win as the starting catcher for Tigres del Licey, Moore’s won-loss starting catcher record is 15-4 for the season including 2-1 in the post season. His catcher’s ERA is around 2.00 for the DWL. In the regular season he went 14 for 51 with two homers, a triple, five doubles and drove in 14 runs. He had a .936 OPS.
The other invitees did not impress me as much in recent fall action: Knapp struggled with the bat hitting in the .230’s in his last 100 at bats in the post season with Reading in the playoffs and in the Arizona Fall League after hitting .404 in August with Reading. Lino is hitting just above the Mendoza Line in the Venezuela Winter League. Crawford committed 32 errors combined in regular, EL playoffs and AFL games. The free swinging Williams had 39 at bats in the Eastern League playoff games and did not walk once though he did hit three homers.
Few Phillies minor league players are still playing in the 2015-2016 offseason leagues as we start the New Year. Rhys Hoskins and Cord Sandberg are still playing in Australia. Herlis Rodriguez plays in the outfield occasionally and Lino catches in the Venezuela Winter League. Also still playing in the VWL are Edubray Ramos, Brock Stassi, Joely Rodriquez and Odubel Herrera. Right fielder Dylan Cozens, second baseman Jesmuel Valentin and pitcher Hoby Milner are still playing in the Puerto Rico Winter League playoffs. Watch HERE from last night’s action when Logan Moore faced Hector Neris in the Dominican Winter League playoffs.
