It was all about the power bats, a key defensive play and bullpen arms last night as the Clearwater Threshers won their third game in row by defeating the Charlotte Stone Crabs 4-3. It was the Threshers third win in a row after losing the first two games to start the Florida State League action.
Kyle Martin blasted his third homer in his last three games and Mitch Walding hit his second in four games to pace the Threshers last night. The Threshers are tied with the Tampa Yankees in the FSL with six home runs each as a team to start the season.
All three of Martin’s long balls have been to the power alley in right field. Watch his two- run homer last night, HERE.
The Threshers only had only five hits in the win, three were for for extra bases including a triple by Herlis Rodriguez. Watch HERE.
Alexis Rivero came out of the bullpen to hold a 4-3 lead for starter Tyler Viza in the sixth inning and struck out the side in the seventh by getting a rare four strikeout inning.
With runs hard to find after Charlotte made it 4-3 in the fifth, the defensive play of the game came in the top of the ninth when the Stone Crabs, Cade Gotta, lined what appeared to be a sure fire double down the third base line. The Threshers left fielder Cord Sandberg made a spectacular throw to cut down a sliding Gotta at second for the second out of the inning. Watch HERE.
Threshers closer Miguel Nunez retired the last batter on a pop out to third to pick- up a two inning save.
Tyler Viza got the win. You can watch one of his strikeouts HERE.
The Threshers and Tampa Bay’s FSL farm team go at it again tonight at Bright House as the Threshers go for four in row with Will Morris making his debut against the Rays, 2015 third rated prospect by MLB Prospect Watch, Brent Honeywell.
