A Passed Ball May Have Cost The Clearwater Threshers The Win

It was a tough loss for the resurgent Clearwater Threshers last night at Bright House. The Threshers were on a three game winning streak. The Threshers Will Morris dueled with Tampa Bay’s third highest rated prospect according to MLB, Brent Honeywell.

While Morris’s fastball was sitting at 90 mph, Honeywell was topping at 95 mph. But the result’s were the same; no score after five innings when Morris left and the sixth when Honeywell was done.

Matt Hockenberry came on in relief and pitched two shutout innings including a 93-mph fastball swinging strikeout. Watch HERE.

In the bottom of the seventh Mitch Walding launched his third home run in five games to the base of the flag pole in right to give the Threshers a 1-0 lead. Watch HERE.  But with two outs in the top on the eight the lead would not hold.

Threshers catcher Gabriel Lino failed to shift and block a pitch and was charged with a passed ball from closer Jesen Therrien.  It would have been a swinging third strike three and what should have the been the third out of the inning. Watch HERE.

The next batter, Christian Toribio hit a no-doubt-about-it home run into the party deck in left to give the Charlotte Stone Crabs the 2-1 lead and the eventual win. Watch HERE.

The 3 and 3 Threshers take on the Stone Crabs in a noon game today.  It will be interesting to see if Lino is in the lineup to work on his catching defense.
