Stobbe, Moniak and Llovera Lead The GCL Phillies To First Place

Nothing beats a game for first place.  In a rare GCL twilight night doubleheader in Dunedin, the Phillies took two from the first place Blue Jays to take over first place in the GCL Northwest Division.

Now with a 31-12 record and two weeks remaining in league action, the Phillies have taken a game lead over the Jays in the battle for the playoff spot.

Cole Stobbe

It was a single and his first professional homer by third round draft pick, Cole Stobbe, watch HERE and HERE.  A rbi single by first round pick Mickey Moniak, watch HERE.  Outstanding starting power pitching by Mauricio Llovera, watch his three strikeouts in a row in the first and second innings HERE, HERE and HERE.  All three players paved the way for the key 4-0 win in the second game.

The first game was a conclusion of a suspended game from earlier in the season with 6’10”, 22 round draft pick, Kyle Young, pitching a strong 4.1 innings to pick up the win.

I left in the fifth inning of the second game to make the end of the Threshers/Blue Jays game at Bright House.  The Threshers needed a win to cut the Blue Jays lead in the FSL Northern division but it was not to be.

In a battle for first place the Blue Jays swept a two-game home and home series with a 4-1 win.  The fading Threshers are now 2 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays for first place.

The only Threshers highlight in the game was an eight inning rbi single by Jiandido Tromp,  Watch HERE.

Based on last night’s play it looks good for playoff action for the surging GCL Phillies but the Clearwater Threshers seem to be mailing it in.
