It was a very odd game as the Lakewood BlueClaws won Game One, 5-0, over the Rome Braves in the best-of-five South Atlantic League Championship Series.
The first four of the five Lakewood run were unearned scoring on errors by the Braves. The lone earned run was a home run that was just fair down the right field line off the bat of first baseman Wilson Garcia. Watch HERE.
Blue Claws pitcher Franklyn Kilome threw a one hit, seven inning shutout though several hard hit lines drives off his fast ball were caught in the outfield. Grant Dyer came on and retired the final six batters in order including three of them on called strike threes.
He retired the first 12 batter he faced striking out five of them.
He struck out nine total. The only the called strike three was his last out in the bottom of the seventh. Watch Kilome’s only called strike three HERE.
Of his eight swinging strike outs, four were on his big curve ball blocked in the dirt by catcher Deivi Grullon who had to throw to first to get the assist. Grullon did a great job of blocking Kilome’s pitches in the dirt all night.
Seven of Kilome’s nine strikeouts came on his curve ball.
MLB.com reported the following on the game:
• Phillies No. 9 prospect Franklyn Kilome didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, and it was the only knock he’d allow over seven scoreless frames. The 21-year-old righty was electric, racking up nine strikeouts against two walks to pace Class A Lakewood in a 5-0 shutout of Rome in Game 1 of the South Atlantic League finals. Kilome has thrown 20 scoreless innings across his past three starts dating back to the regular season, with 24 strikeouts and just eight hits allowed in that span.
“I felt really good. It might have been my best game,” Kilome told MiLB.com. “It was important to win Game 1, so I definitely wanted to be well. My curveball was good. Very good.”
