A few Phillies prospects still remain playing winter ball. Several of them are coming into their own as the winter season winds down. They are Cameron Perkins in the Dominican Winter League and Grenny Cumana in winter ball in Columbia had break out games last night.
Perkins listed on the Phillies AAA roster went 4 for 5 for the Gigantes in the playoffs. Cam leads the DWL playoffs in hitting with a .435 average (10 for 23 with a homer). During the regular DWL season he hit .346 against right-handed pitching even though he is a right-handed bat. He hit .292 against all pitching last season for AAA, Lehigh Valley playing primarily left field.
Joining him in the Gigantes lineup for the playoffs is Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco. But Franco is off to slow start hitting only .154 after the first week of playoff action.
Franco struggled last season hitting only .255, 25 points less than he hit for the Phillies in 2015.
Second baseman Cumana went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs yesterday for the Toros in the Columbian Winter League where he is hitting .313 (52 for 166 with one homer). He played for Lakewood last season hitting .291 in the SAL.
Though Perkins is not yet listed on the non-roster invitees list to the Phillies major league spring camp, he should have earned an invite with his winter ball play. Cumana will most likely start the season in the minor league spring camp and start the season with the high A, Clearwater Threshers.
