Seranthony Dominguez Brilliant In Clearwater Threshers Win

Clearwater’s starting pitcher 22-year-old Seranthony Dominguez pitched a game to remember yesterday in Lakeland.  He struck out 7 of the first 9 batters he faced.  He went on to strikeout 10 over six inning in his one run, three hitter for his first win of the season. He has struck out 14 and walked one over eight innings in two appearances so far this season.

According to the Threshers webcast of the game, Dominguez was in the high 90’s in the first inning and finished up at 96 mph in the sixth.  He walked no batters in his 80 pitch effort.

The Thresher went on to win 4-1 with Ranfi Casimiro pitching two shutout inning for the hold and Jeff Singer picking up his third save over the first seven days of the season with a clean two strikeout ninth inning.

Going into today’s action Dominguez is fourth in all of Advanced A with 14 strikeouts and Singer is tied for first in saves in all of minor league baseball.   With the bat Threshers Cornelius Randolph is tied for first in homers with three in all of Advanced A.

But the real story was the outstanding pitching yesterday of Dominguez to get his first win of the season.  We  got to know him back in extended spring training in 2015 when he retired Dioner Navarro from the 2008 Phillies, Tampa Bay, World Series days who was rehabbing at the time with the Blue Jays.  Watch the video below HERE.

Dominguez finished strong in the regular season last year with Lakewood pitching 21 shutout innings and striking out 24 to go 3-0 in his last four starts.   The big difference  this season is he has reduced his strikeout to walk ratio.  In 2016 he walked 11 over his last five starts for nearly a 3- 1 strikeout to walk ratio.

The experts in the Phillies Front Office chose not to protect Dominguez in the 2016 Rule Five Draft.  They dodged the bullet because their peers on the other 29 teams passed on drafting him.

Usually the big moves take place around the Florida State League All-Star game which is scheduled for June 17th this season.  If Dominguez keeps it up, moving up day just might come sooner for him.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show. This is what this blog is mostly all about. To read more, click here:
