Last night’s 2-1 Clearwater Threshers win over the Charlotte Stone Crab was a prime example that good pitching beats good hitting. It has resulted in a two game lead over Daytona for the first place in the Northern Division of the FSL.
The Threshers won on a quality seven inning start by Jose Taveras and excellent two innings of relief by closer Jeff Singer. They could must only two hits including the two-run double by Wilson Garcia which was their total run scoring offense.
Taveras leads the Florida State League with four wins and Jeff Singer is tied for the lead in saves with seven.
The Threshers are so dominating in starting pitching that the pitcher who goes tonight, Franklyn Kilome, has only the fourth highest starter ERA at 2.31 on the staff.
Three of the top five pitchers in ERA in the FSL are Threshers starters Cole Irvin,( 3-2, 1.69 ERA), Taveras , ( 4-1, 1.70 ERA), and Seranthony Dominguez, ( 3-0, 1.74).
Tom Eshelman pitched the first half of the 2016 season for Clearwater and went 4-2 with a 3.34 ERA. Last night he pitched an eight inning, four hit, shutout in his AAA debut Lehigh Valley.
Clearly, the Thresher have four starting pitchers so far who have out pitched Eshelman from last season at high A this season.
