Playoff Hopes Dashed for Clearwater as Dunedin Clinches Playoff Berth

Farm Director Joe Jordan and I see a different game. Last night Joe sat up in the stands watching his hapless Clearwater Threshers get eliminated from the FSL playoffs for the second straight season by the Dunedin Blue Jays, 5-3, at now Spectrum Field.

J.D. Hammer ready to fire a 97 mph fastball for a strikeout.

The only definite major league prospect I saw on the field for the Threshers was pitcher,  J.D. Hammer. Using a 94-97 mph fastball and an occasional off speed pitch, he struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced in middle relief in the 6th and 7th innings. Watch HERE.

The two guys they used in late relief with their 90 mph fastballs gave up a combined three runs in the last two innings for the loss.

The biggest disappointment last night was watching Darick Hall striking out in his final at bat with runners on first and second in the eight inning.  He swung and missed each time on three sliders from a Blue Jays left handed reliever, Kirby Snead. The three sliders were all in the same spot off the outside corner of the plate. It was as if he never saw such a pitch in the Sally League.  Watch HERE.

Darick Hall singles for his only hit of the game in the first inning

Hall did single in the first inning making his Spectrum Field debut and came around to score on an Austin Bossart single. Watch HERE.

At least the Threshers came to within four games before being eliminated from the  playoffs. Unlike the Lehigh Valley IronPigs who open a final four game series with the Yankees AAA farm team trailing them by 10.5 games.  Or the Yankees AA farm team where Reading trails them by only 20 games going into the final weekend.

Only the GCL Phillies in the Gulf Coast half season rookie league will make the post season playoffs this season which will start with a knockout game on Sunday.

Of course making  minor league playoffs appears to be not important to the Phillies Front Office as it is to the Blue Jays and that might be the right way to go about it but developing a batter who can lay off a slider out of the zone should be important?  And they did not do a very job at that last night either!

Watch the Guerrero Jr. game winning home run HERE.

Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guererro Jr celebrate Guerrero’s game winning, 2-run homer.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show. This is what this blog is mostly all about. To read more, click here: https://baseballross.wordpress.com/2012/02/05/how-i-got-started-in-baseball/
