On Sunday, we watched the best game of the season so far. The Clearwater Threshers downed the Dunedin Blue Jays 1-0. It was the last game in April and solidified Darick Hall as 0ur Position Player for April. He hit his eight homer in the month. Bailey Falter is our Pitcher for April. He pitched a one-hit, seven inning, shutout to end the month. For the month he went 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA.
The Florida State League is not league known for the home run ball. Hall is on the pace for a ridiculous home run season. He has hit eight home runs in 83 at bats in April to lead the FSL and is tied for second in all the minor leagues in home runs trailing the two leaders at AAA who have nine.
Last year, Darick missed much of April with an injury and did not hit any home runs in six games and 19 at bats in the month. He went on to break the Lakewood all time home run record when he it 27 long balls in only 114 games and 426 at bats. He added two more homers in seven games and 26 at bats with Clearwater to end the 2017 season.
This season, in April, Darick has started in 22 of Threshers 24 games. He did not play in two of them for reasons known only by the “experts” in the Phillies minor league department. In one of those two games, he did get a plate appearance as a pinch hitter but was intentionally walked.
If Darick can average eight homers a month in the five month minor league season, he will be on pace to hit 40 homers this season.
Bailey Falter is off to a great start and finished April strong in his last two starts. In those two starts in 14 innings he has allowed only two runs, six hits, one walk and struck out 13. He is now sixth among all 30 teams’ qualified pitchers in Advanced A with a 0.91 WHIP.
Last year with Lakewood, Bailey got off to slow start in April going 0-1 in three starts with a 4.85 ERA. He ended up strong pitching to an 8-7 record, a 2.99 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP for the entire 2017 season.
Hall and Falter are the Baseball Betsy and Ross Position Player and Pitcher of the month for April in the Phillies organization.
