Threshers’ right fielder for most of the season, Jose Pujols, has been selected as the Florida State League Player of the Year and last night the Threshers clinched the Second-Half Northern Division Title with a 2-1 win over Jupiter, read HERE.
The Threshers won the Northern Division in the FSL by getting hot in August and having the best record in the second half going 43-22. The last time the Threshers were in the playoffs was in 2015 when they were eliminated in a two game sweep in the semi-finals by the Daytona Tortugas. The only run they scored in the two games was a home run by Rhys Hoskins, watch HERE.
This time, the Threshers definitely have the pitching. Last night Adonis Medina pitched a brilliant, seven inning, five hitter allowing only one run while striking out seven. The Thresher won on a two-run base hit by Kevin Markham.
Medina would appear to be set up to be the starter in the first game of the best-of-three semi-finals against again Daytona next Tuesday at Spectrum Field. He leads the Threshers pitchers with a 10-4 record this season.
The Threshers join the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Lakewood BlueClaws and the GCL Phillies East in the minor league post season. The GCL team was eliminated in a one game, semi-final playoff.
Pujols hit .301/.364/.523 with 18 homers, one triple and 16 doubles in 95 games with the Threshers before being promoted to Double A Reading on Aug. 3. Read HERE. Dunedin’s Patrick Murphy was selected as the Pitcher of the Year. Watch the two singles that Pujols hit off of Murphy during the season, HERE.
Pujols has forced the Phillies to make a decision on putting him on the 40-man roster since he is Rule 5 eligible. It seems like a no brainer. Combined with Reading, he has slashed at .294/.361/.508 with 22 homers and 76 RBIs in 117 games. He has a strong arm with 12 outfield assist so far this season.
Congratulations to both Jose Pujols and the Threshers for a great season!
