Nothing beats playoff baseball. The Threshers led most of the way but the Daytona Tortugas fought back to tie it up 6-6 in the top of the eight inning. The never-say-die Threshers reached deep in the eighth inning thanks to the arm and then bat of Grenny Cumana and Addison Russ pitching in the top of the ninth for a 7-6 win.
From left field on a base hit, Cumana threw out the potential lead run at the plate in the top of the eight. Then, he homered into the Tiki Bar seats in left in the bottom of the eight in what turned out to be the game winning run. Watch HERE.
Russ closed down the Tortugas in the ninth by retiring two of the best bats in the Cincinnati Reds minor league system. He induced Taylor Tammell to pop out, watch HERE. Then, he retired Ibandel Isabel by grounding out to get the win in the top of the ninth, watch HERE.
Tammell had homered earlier in the game and you may remember he was the MVP in the Futures Games during the MLB All-Star weekend. Isabel hit 35 home runs in 104 games during the regular season for the Tortugas..
What a way to get started in the Florida State League playoffs winning a 7-6 game on a clutch home run by Cumana to break up a tie game in the bottom of the eight and retiring two of the best bats in the league in the top of the ninth by Addy Russ.
The series now moves to Daytona tomorrow night and Thursday night, if needed, in the best of three series. The Threshers will rely on starters Alejandro Requena and Mauricio Llovera, if needed, in the next two games.
