The Clutch Win of the 2018 Season: An 11 Strikeout, 7-Inning Complete Game by Mauricio Llovera

It was an important first game of a doubleheader back on a hot August 26th Sunday afternoon game at Spectrum Field.  The Threshers still had not clinched first place and a playoff spot in the second half.  Nine games remained.

Mauricio Llovera

Mauricio Llovera was on the mound. He would deliver a 3-2 complete game win striking out 11 in the seven-inning game. Not until the bottom of the seventh inning did the Threshers go ahead for the win on RBI singles by Mickey Moniak and Kyle Martin.

Llovera started off giving up two homers in the first inning to the Charlotte Stone Crabs. Then, he would settle down and shutout the StoneCrabs the rest of the way by allowing only two hits and getting 10 of his 11 strikeout over the final six innings. He struck out the side in the fourth inning.

His fastball was sitting at 94-97 mph and topped early at 98 mph.  It was mainly his off-speed stuff in the high 80’s and his 80 mph curve ball that he used as his strikeout pitches. He changed speeds, work his pitches inside and out and changed the eye level of the batters to dominate the rest of the way.

Llovera won his third straight game and went on in his final start of the month to win another clutch start to go 4-0 in August. He pitched to a 1.74 ERA, striking out 38 in 31 innings in the month to pitch the Threshers into the playoffs.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show. This is what this blog is mostly all about. To read more, click here:
