All Mauricio Llovera did in his one inning of work today at Spectrum Field was strikeout-the-side of Pirate Instructs in the fourth inning to lead the Phillies to a 2-1 Instructs win. See HERE. The 22-year-old is quickly establishing himself as a top Phillies minor league starting pitching prospect.
He won today’s pitch-off for the No. 1 starting pitching prospect at Instructs vs. Sixto Sanchez and Adonis Medina. Sanchez pitched the first and second innings and gave up the only Pirates run which scored on a double to the gap in left-center in the second inning, watch HERE. Sixto struck out two in the inning, watch HERE. Medina came on and pitched a scoreless third in his one inning of work, watch his last out on soft contact, watch HERE.
The Phillies Instructs won the game 2-1 on an RBI base hit in the fifth by Mitchell Edwards, a-19-year-old, switch-hitting catcher from Australia. Edwards went the other way and hit two singles to left in his two at bats. Watch HERE.
A strong bullpen effort was led by Luke Leftwich, Tyler Viza, Seth McGarry, Jake Kinney and Robinson Martinez. They shutdown the Pirates after the second inning. Martinez struck out-the-side for the save in the ninth inning. Sanchez, Leftwich, Viza and McGarry will be headed to the Arizona Fall League in a week or so.
The Phillies Instructs go back at it in an intra-squad game Saturday morning at 10:00 AM at Spectrum Field. They are sure more exciting to watch than the big-league team playing-out the MLB season this weekend in Philadelphia.
