The Phillies signed Jhailyn Ortiz to a $ 4.2 million signing bonus back in 2015 as a top international free agent. Whether he was worth it remains to be seen. Every time we think Jhailyn is going to break out with the bat, he returns to the vicinity of the Mendoza line.
In the month of May for the Clearwater Threshers, Ortiz hit six homers in 83 at bats. However, so far in June he has no homers in 42 at bats but remains tied with teammate Madison Stokes with 7 homers for the season to lead the team.
Now, Jhailyn is on a what we would consider a doubles hot streak. He has gone 5 for 19 with four doubles to drive in four runs in his last five games. In yesterday’s contest against the St Lucie Mets, he hit two doubles and drove in two runs. This gives him the team lead in RBIs with 30 at the halfway point in the season. Still, his slash line is nothing to write home about at .210/275/.387. Watch his RBI double from Monday’s game.
Every time Ortiz puts a modest homer or doubles streak together, we fans in the stands get excited only to be disappointed by a series of hitless games that follow. He is a much better hitter than his current .210 average at the half point in the Florida State League season. He needs to have a breakout second half to stay a serious prospect.
