Watching TV last night was a lot of fun. Reading’s Darick Hall against the Bowie Baysox and the Phillies’ Drew Smyly pitching against the San Francisco Giants. Hall just might be able to lead the Fightin Phils to the Eastern League post season. With luck, Smyly could pitch the Phillies into the National League playoffs.
I just can’t get it in my head why Hall is not in AAA. Over his last ten games at AA, he is hitting .400 plus nine walks. His 31 doubles leads the Eastern League and is second in all of AA ball in two base hits.
Last week, Hall was named Eastern League Player of the week. Read HERE. Since then, in his last two games against Bowie, he has gone 3 for 4 with two doubles and five walks. The Bowie TV play-by-play guys said last night three of the walks were off of 0-2 counts. Those were major league at bats!
Smyly is looking like a Cy Young candidate after his two starts for the Phillies. He is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA after allowing only one run and eight hits in 13 innings. He has struck out 13 and walked only 3.
Smyly is now part of the “two aces” to go along with Aaron Nola. If the Phillies can get some quality starts from newly acquired Jason Vargas they will have the “three aces”. If they call up Spencer Howard and his high 90’s heat they will have the “four aces”.
With the differences in stitching of balls between AA and AAA, with AA having larger stitching and AAA/MLB having smoother stitching, Spencer may need time to adjust to the differences in the feel of the major league ball.
All we know from watching Howard pitch this season with Clearwater and watching him then pitch on MiLB-TV with Reading, he is major league ready right now! Howard’s high 90’s heat and sharp breaking pitches would compliment the mid- 80’s heat of Vargas. When Howard arrives in the Show, the Phillies just might have the “four aces” back in action again!
The Phillies need to get Darick Hall and Spencer to AAA, ASAP if they are serious about going the post season!
