Big Rix Wingrove Saves The Day for the Entire Phillies Organization

August 23rd, 2019 might not go down as the worst day in Phillies history but it will rank, “right up there”.  The major league team, supposedly in the hunt for a National League Wild Card berth, blew a seven-run lead to the Miami Marlins, the worst team in the National League. They were outscored from the third inning on by 19 to 4 in a humiliating 19 to 11 loss.

Yesterday ‘s games for the most part were not good for the Phillies system. For the first time in 16 years the MLB Phillies lost a game when they were up by 7 runs. Also, all the Phillies farm teams lost but one. Only three RBIs by Rix Wingrove, the big, 19-year-old first baseman for the GCL Phillies West team, saved the day for the entire Phillies system. His clutch hitting resulted in a 7-4 win over the GCL Blue Jays.

Even Wingrove was slumping, now hitting only .176 in his last ten games. He did manage a sacrifice fly RBI and a two-run RBI double in yesterday’s game to provide the winning three-run margin in the win.

Rix has had a nice season in the Gulf Coast League. He hit .300 in June, .306 in July and so far in August, he is also hitting .306 for this month. His real strength this season has been hitting with runners in scoring position where he is hitting .365 with a 1.099 OPS. For the season in 45 games, he is leading the GCL in hits (51), doubles (17), RBIs (36) and total bases (87).

The GCL Phillies West team has reduced its magic number to clinch the North division to three games with seven remaining. The GCL season ends next Saturday morning. Then, a one game semi-final game usually follows the next day for the right to play in the best-of-three Finals for the GCL Championship.

Though the Phillies are a very long shot for the MLB post-season, Phillies fans should be able to look forward to the GCL Phillies West team hosting a game in the brief GCL playoffs led by the clutch MVP, Rix Wingrove.

About Baseball Ross

I have been a faithful Phillies follower all my life. Today I am most intrigued by those players in the minor league system who work every day of the year to make it to the Show. This is what this blog is mostly all about. To read more, click here:
