The Phillies minor league season ended with Reading losing three straight games in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs against the Trenton Thunder. They lost game one 4-3, the second game by getting shutout 3-0 in ten innings and lost in final game 12-2. Overall, they were outscored 19-5 in the three games of best of 5 series.
We have awarded to Darick Hall, the somewhat prestigious “Baseball Betsy and Ross Best 2019 Playoff Hitter Award” and Spencer Howard and David Parkinson shared the “Best 2019 Playoff Pitcher Award” for the Phillies minor leagues this post season.
Who knows where our Phillies minor league playoff awards will lead them? We gave our Phillies 2017 playoff pitcher award to Jacob Waguespack. Read Here. He made his major league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays this season and is 4-4 in 13 games including 10 starts.
Hall seemed like he was the only one who could hit in the post season. He went 4 f0r 12 (.333) with a 1.000 OPS including a home run. His OPS was the fifth highest of all players in the Eastern League’s semi-final round. His homer came off of a Yankees major league rehab starter, Luis Serverino, in Game 3. The Phillies three, first round draft picks in the Reading lineup did not hit much over the three games. They struggle to put the ball in play in the three games: Moniak, BA .231, 6Ks, Bohm, BA .200, 4Ks and Randolph, BA .200, 5Ks.
Reading’s starting pitchers in the first and second games were outstanding. In Game 1, Howard went seven innings allowing only one run and two hits while striking out 12. In Game 2, Parkinson went seven shutout innings giving up only three hits and striking out 5. In both games the Reading bullpen took the losses.
Congratulations to playoff Award winners Darick Hall, Spencer Howard and David Parkinson for having a great post season! We hope they follow previous award winner Jacob Waguespack into the major leagues sooner rather than later!
