Playing three consecutive spring training games as a late inning replacement do not make an era but those games do tell us that the Phillies have great centerfield prospect on the horizon. All the 20 year-old Johan Rojas has done in the last three Phillies spring training games combined is go 4 for 5 including a walk-off single and stealing three bases. Earlier he made a Willie Mays-type catch in centerfield.
Yet, the Phillies seem to have a hard time deciding from four other candidates who will be their opening day starter in centerfield. It’s clear by this time next season the best they have just might be a guy named Johan Rojas.
One of the joys of spring training games is watching a young player succeed and projecting what he might become. Of course, Rojas will not be the Phillies 2021 opening day centerfielder but all bets are off after that.
As longtime Clearwater Threshers season ticket holders, we hope to catch a fleeting glimpse of him starting this season with the now Low A Clearwater team. He will be here not for long. Book it!
Rojas started slowly in spring training and did not make much contact in his late inning role up until three games ago. However, in those last three games he broke out by going with the pitch to right and he has four line drive base hits to show for it.
He has a nice three game hitting streak going as a late inning outfield replacement. He has. played all the outfield positions in those games but he seems to be a natural centerfielder.
I like comps so I say Rojas has Willie Mays type tools! As a great hockey coach once said about whether or not a prospect will make it in the NHL, he simply said “you know it when you see it!”
We have seen it with Johan Rojas and he will make it big in MLB baseball.
