The first major league game ever to be played in Dunedin Fla. was one of the best games you could ever watch. It was played in The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in 11 innings, 7-5.
The real reason we made an extra special effort to be there last night to watch opening of the Blue Jays home season was because of Mike Trout of the Angels.
Forced to start in their spring training home because the pandemic has made it difficult to get in and out of Canada, the Blue Jays are expected to play at least 22 home games at Dunedin’s newly refurbished TB Ballpark if they stay until the end of May. The first game played there will be memorable in large part because of Trout. Read HERE.
Trout showed why he is considered the best player in the Baseball. He went 3 for 5 with a double scoring a run in first inning, hit one of the longest blasts ever hit in Dunedin in the 5th inning and a single in the 7th inning.
His home run traveled high over the left field wall. The ball hit off an elementary school sitting just beyond the wall. The blast showed the true power of Mike Trout in a traditional minor league park nestled into a small town neighborhood. Read HERE.
Trout could have won the game for the Angels in the top of the ninth inning when he lined a bullet to center only to see the ball caught off the grass on a charge play by Jays’ centerfielder Randal Grichuk to end the inning. Had the ball got passed him, Trout would have had an easy triple. He ended the game only a triple short of the hitting for the cycle.
Since Trout is a native of South Jersey, wouldn’t he have looked good in centerfield for the Phillies this season. After all, he was a free agent last winter and the Phillies still do not have a legitimate major league centerfielder.
Why worry about paying a luxury tax when you could have had the two best outfielders in baseball in Trout and Bryce Harper? Oh well, we can only dream of what it could have been if Trout had signed with the Phillies.
Another first last night was the first “call to New York” to review a play at first….
Last night in our hometown of Dunedin, Florida, we will never forget the first major league regular season game ever played here. All because we saw with our own eyes just how great Mike Trout really is!
