The Clearwater Threshers have already won two walk-off games on just the first week of the 2021 season. However, they still went only 3 and 3 during the first of twenty, six game series that will take place this season.
Even Sunday afternoon in the Threshers 6-4 loss in the final game of the series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the Threshers had the winning run at the plate when the game ended on a fly out to right with two runners on base.
The Threshers’ second walk off win of the series came Saturday night. They had scored only two runs in their previous 18 innings and were shutout for eight innings Saturday night before scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk off the Lakeland Flying Tigers 4-3.
The first walk-off game on Wednesday night was a 13-11 win in eleven innings. The game was won by a grand slam by D.J. Stewart. Read my blog here including video of the grand slam.
Stewart would also figure in the Saturday night’s second walk off with a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. With the Threshers trailing 3-0, Luis Garcia had walked to lead off the inning and Casey Martin followed with a doubled putting runners at second and third to set up Stewart’s RBI single.
Now down 3-1 with Martin at third and the tying run in Stewart at first, Abrahan Gutierrez went the other way with a single to right scoring Martin making the score 3-2.
Then Hunter Markwardt drove a line drive double to right center scoring Stewart and Gutierrez who crossed the plate just before the throw for the walk off 4-3 Threshers win.
It has been an interesting week to see. You had games that were hard to watch and two games that kept you on the edge of your seat in the final inning. It makes the Threshers a team to keep your eye on.
