The Threshers had to finish strong to get to 9-9 by winning both weekend games against the Dunedin Blue Jays to finish the first 18 games of the season at .500. They will play 120 games this season divided into 20, six game series each week with Monday’s off. Nice and tidy.
They have decent pitching as we have shown in previous blogs but hitting has been sporadic. The first and second hitters in the lineup have been Johan Rojas and Luis Garcia. They ended up each hitting just .200 after the first 18 games. You do not want your two top of the order hitters battling the Mendoza Line all season but so far this is what has happened.
It is up the rest of the line to do some damage. Let’s look at some of the other hitters in the lineup from last weekend’s two games.
Corner infielder D.J. Stewart went 4 for 8 to raise his average to .339 for the season.
Catcher Abrahan Gutierrez went 1 for 3 with an RBI in Saturday’s game. Though he is hitting .372 with a 1.012 OPS so far, he has played in only four of each six games in all the three series so far.
First baseman/DH Rixon Wingrove broke out of a slump and went 3 for 7 in the two games with two double and a triple for 4 RBIs. He has always been an RBI machine in the Gulf Coast League and the Australian Baseball League.
Another player who has started slowly has been corner outfielder Ben Pelletier. He went 1 for 2 with an RBI in Saturday’s game but did not play in Sunday’s game.
The video below shows several of the at bats of all four of the above from Saturday’s game. If they can keep it up, look for them help Clearwater win some games and for them to move up quickly in the Phillies system.
