The Phillies Low A Clearwater Threshers is comprised of players from all over the World. Sunday, I watched an exciting Threshers game in which the best players were a first baseman from Australia, Rixon Wingrove, a pitcher from Russia, Anton Kuznetsov and a left fielder from Canada, Ben Pelletier.
Wingrove hit two homers to keep the Threshers in the game. He is now third in homers in the Southeast League which is just starting the second half of the season. With the wind blowing out to left, he went with the pitch and hit it out to the bullpen over the left field wall. His second home run was pulled to right after the wind had changed directions and the flags were blowing out to right.
Kuznetsov came on in middle relief. He was the only Threshers pitcher to hold the Dunedin Blue Jays without a run. He pitched 2.1 innings and had two strikeouts.
Ben Pelletier was outstanding with the bat and glove. He made a couple of great catches in left including a diving catch in left to keep Kuznetsov’s outing scoreless. In the bottom of the ninth inning with the Threshers trailing 9-6, Ben hit an inside the park home run off the center field wall to make it 9-7.
The game was not decided until the last pitch in the bottom of the ninth when Wingrove, representing the winning run, struck out swinging, after hitting a line drive foul to right on the first pitch.
Baseball has truly become a favored game of the world. We saw that on Sunday afternoon here in Clearwater, Florida.
