We have been season ticket holders of the Clearwater Threshers through good and bad for the last ten years. This year we are still watching them after the team dropped down to the lowest level of full season minor league baseball but the excitement never stops.
Here’s what happened last night in the wonderful world of Phillies baseball as we saw it:
The big league team lost out on a deal for a badly needed left handed starter they thought they had. Some how the deal broke down over the medical record of a Threshers starting pitcher Cristian Hernandez. The lefty Matt Moore the Phillies have currently in their rotation was roughed up for six runs in the first two innings last night. The other player the Phillies were supposedly sending to the Pirates in the deal was Threshers’ catcher Abrahan Gutierrez.
AA Reading had a pitcher throw a rare immaculate inning. Reliever Kyle Dohy pitched the very rare inning where all three batters were struck out by him on only nine pitches. We watched Dohy pitch in Clearwater back in 2018.
High A Jersey Shore has an outfielder who hit his 13th home run in 23 July games last night. Jhailyn Ortiz continues one of the best July home run months ever in baseball. He now has 19 homers on the entire season. Last season when the Threshers were a High A team in the now defunct Florida State League, Jhailyn hit 19 home run in 430 at bats for them. Already this season in High A again, he has hit now 19 home runs in only 251 at bats.
We were in the stands last night when the Clearwater Threshers had a pitcher, Rodolfo Sanchez using his 93 mph fastball to throw four no-run, no hit innings. In the process he was charged with a walk, a balk and hit two batters, one of whom laid prone in the batters box in front of us for several minutes before moving and finally getting up.
Never a dull evening in Phillies baseball even when all their teams go win-less.
